Your result is in! You're a Frozen Creator, and here's what that means...
The Frozen Creator is one of the most capable, high-standard, deeply motivated types I work with, and also one of the most stuck. Because the same part of you that cares intensely about doing things well is the part that makes starting feel impossible.
I know this pattern well. It’s not a character flaw. It’s not laziness (not even close). It’s a combination of executive function challenges and high standards that creates a kind of paralysis that looks like avoidance from the outside. but feels nothing like that from the inside.
There’s a place a lot of Frozen Creators know very well. I think of it as the waiting room.
You’re waiting until you have a proper block of time. Until you feel more ready. Until you know enough. Until the conditions are right. Until you can do it well enough to be worth doing at all. And the thing you need to start sits there with you, perfectly imagined, completely untouched.
Here’s what’s worth knowing about that waiting room: your brain sent you there for a reason. It’s protecting you from the discomfort of imperfection, from the risk of starting something and finding out it isn’t as good as you imagined. That’s not irrational. It’s just not very useful.
The first step is simply noticing, without judgement, when this happens.
But then what?
Conventional advice might say: Just break it down into chunks! Set a SMART Goal! Lower your standards! But if you’re truly frozen, you’ll know this rarely helps. You may feel like you’re not even ready to do that, because you need to get more of a state of readiness before you can do those things. And lowering your standards just feels wrong. You want this to be excellent.
You could even say that you’re trying to start it and finish it all at the same time.
One of the most useful reframes I offer Frozen Creators is this: starting and finishing are not the same task. Your brain has collapsed them into one enormous thing: “do the project” – which feels so big and high-stakes that it can’t find an entry point.
You’re a creator. You are good at being creative. You’re probably a great problem solver, and if you can just get started, you’ll find a way through it. It doesn’t have to be linear. You don’t need to know all the steps before you begin. Imperfect action beats perfect inaction. And you can be imperfect and still be EXCELLENT.
The habit worth building is not “make a plan and execute the plan”, and it’s not “be more disciplined” or “stop caring so much about it being great”
Work.Life.Smarts is a totally different approach to habit building for ADHDers. The habits we focus on first are:
- Self-awareness so you can learn about your patterns and notice those moments as they happen, without judgement
- Making conscious choices to try something new (or not – you’re in control here).
- Curiosity, so you can honestly evaluate what’s working and what isn’t.
Then we can build a personal toolbox. Not a rigid system, but a set of strategies you can try when you notice you’re frozen – ways of lowering the threshold of beginning so your brain stops treating every task like a performance review.
The vision is there. The capability is there. Let’s work on the bridge between the two.
